Why insurance feels like a bitter pill
Ever been there? You scroll through your Facebook feed and see news of someone facing medical bills in the millions, or a friend posting photos from a luxurious private hospital bed, and your heart sinks… You look at the money in your own account and think, “If I got sick, where would the money come from?”
Your first thought is “I need insurance!”
But once you start searching on Google, technical terms come flooding in: “lump-sum cover” “itemized cover” “add-on riders” “supplementary contracts” or “Unit Linked”. Less than 5 minutes in, many people give up and close the screen because they don't know where to begin.
Take it easy and set those worries aside. This article is not written to push a sale. Instead, we will “lay out the map” to guide you toward the coverage that is “just right” for you. By the end, you will be able to shop for insurance like a pro, with us as your mentor.
Check up on your own life first; don't rush to open your wallet
The number one mistake insurance buyers make is “buying because friends did” or “buying out of courtesy to the agent”. There is no such thing as the best insurance in the world; there is only “the insurance that best fits your stage of life”. So before you decide to pay a large sum, try answering these 3 key questions first.
First, what are you most afraid of right now? Close your eyes and picture it: what is the biggest worry on your mind? If you fear that if you passed away suddenly, your parents, children or partner would struggle financially with no one to support them, then you need “life insurance focused on high life cover”.
But if you fear that a serious illness, a critical disease or surgery would wipe out your lifetime savings in medical bills, then what you should focus on is “health and critical illness insurance”.
Or if you fear running out of money in old age and don't want to burden your children when you retire, your goal immediately becomes “savings or annuity insurance”.
Second, how much can you afford? This is very important. Insurance is a long-term contract, much like “running a marathon”. If you can pay this year out of enthusiasm but can't keep up next year and have to let the policy lapse, the money you paid before is almost wasted.
The financial rule of thumb suggests that your total insurance premiums should not exceed 10 to 15 percent of your annual income. But if you are single and debt-free, you might go up to 20 percent, as long as it does not affect your day-to-day liquidity.
Third, what benefits do you already have? Don't forget to check your basic entitlements, whether social security or group insurance provided by your employer. Lay out those policies and see how far they cover you and where the gaps are, so you only buy personal insurance to “top up” what's missing, without paying for duplicate cover.
Understanding “life insurance” in plain language, and choosing to fit your goal
Life insurance doesn't come in just one form. It's like a menu where each dish offers a different taste and nutritional value. Let's see which type suits whom.
Term insurance The concept is “high cover, low premium, but no money back”. It's like “hiring a security guard to watch your house”: you pay year by year, or sign a 5- or 10-year contract. If a burglar breaks in or something happens to you during that period, your loved ones receive a very large payout. But if you live through the contract in good health, the guard simply finishes the job and goes home, and you get no money back.
This type is ideal for heads of families with young children or people with a home loan, because high cover is needed while building your life. If something happens, the debt must be cleared and the children must finish school.
Whole Life The concept is “a guaranteed legacy with long-term cover”. It's like “buying a house that will definitely be yours”: you pay a fixed premium for a period, but are covered well into old age, up to 90 or 99. The advantage is a guaranteed payout whenever you pass away, leaving a lump sum for your children or covering funeral costs so your loved ones are not burdened. Importantly, this type is commonly used as the base contract for buying “add-on health insurance”.
Savings insurance The concept is “saving money with cover included”. It feels like depositing money in a bank with insurance thrown in. You earn returns in the form of dividends or cash back as clearly stated in the contract. It suits people who struggle to save, want to force themselves to save, or want to use the premiums for a “tax deduction”.
Dissecting “health insurance”: how to choose so you aren't let down at claim time
This is the most complicated part, and the part OMC Broker pays the most attention to when advising customers, because health insurance has so many fine details. Broadly, we divide it into 2 teams.
Team A: itemized cover, The Budget Saver This type of policy clearly splits the coverage limit into sub-categories, such as a room rate of 2,000 THB per day, surgery 30,000 THB and medicine 20,000 THB. The advantage is a very low starting premium, sometimes just a few thousand a year. But the frightening downside is that when you are seriously ill or need major surgery, the split limits are often not enough, so you have to pay the “difference” out of your own pocket, which can sometimes run into the hundreds of thousands.
Team B: lump-sum cover, The Lump Sum This is the most popular type and the one we recommend. The concept is “one large coverage limit per year”, such as 1 million, 5 million or even up to 100 million THB. Surgery, medicine, doctor's fees and medical supplies are all deducted from this single limit. The advantage is “peace of mind”: however serious the illness, you're covered as long as it doesn't exceed the million-level limit you bought. Although the premium is higher than itemized cover, you get financial security in a crisis in return, which makes it worthwhile.
Don't forget the “room rate”, or Room Board One trap many people fall into is looking only at the treatment limit and forgetting the room rate. Private hospital rooms these days cost more than 5-star hotels. Check carefully how much the policy pays for the room. We recommend a baseline of at least 3,000 to 6,000 THB or more to cover most standard hospitals.
Traps beginners must watch out for: read this so you don't get let down
Many customers have come to consult OMC Broker after being unable to claim elsewhere because they didn't understand these key conditions.
Waiting Period Remember: “Buy insurance today, get sick tomorrow, and you can't claim.” Insurers have a waiting period to prevent people who already know they are ill from rushing to buy insurance. General illnesses such as colds or diarrhoea usually require a 30-day wait, while serious or chronic conditions such as tumours, stones or cysts often require up to 120 days. So “the best time to get insured is while you're healthy.”
Pre-existing Condition If you have had an illness before or already have a treatment history when you buy insurance, the insurer will usually “not cover that condition”, or at worst void the contract if you concealed information. The key trick is to “declare the truth”. OMC Broker will help negotiate and find the insurer with the most flexible conditions. The premium may be a little higher, but the cover is certain, which is better than paying premiums and then being unable to claim.
Health insurance must be “renewed” every year Most health insurance premiums increase with age; the older you get, the more expensive it becomes, and the contract runs year by year, so you need long-term financial planning. Nowadays, however, many plans guarantee renewal and won't refuse you even if you claim a lot, which is something to consider as a top priority.
Why buy through a “broker”: the secret single-company agents won't tell you
Suppose you want lump-sum health insurance. If you go to Company A, they will say “A's is the best”. If you go to Company B, they will say “B's is the best value”.
But the truth is “no company is the best at everything”. Some have cheap premiums but difficult claims, some have fast claims but expensive premiums, and some excel at critical illness but are only average on general health insurance. So how would you know? Comparing 20 companies yourself and reading thousands of pages of policies isn't realistic, is it?
This is why OMC Broker, or simply OMC, exists for you. Buying through us differs from buying direct or through a regular agent in the following ways.
We are neutral, a Neutral Advisor We partner with more than 30 leading insurers across Thailand and are not tied to any one company. So we dare to tell you straight, “This plan isn't right for you” or “This company's plan is better: cheaper premium, same cover”. We choose what fits you, not what boosts our sales.
We show you a clear comparison, a Real Comparison OMC Broker has a data system that can lay out insurance plans from many providers side by side, “blow for blow”. At the same price, who offers more cover, and who has fewer fussy conditions? You will see the full picture before deciding.
One Stop Service after-sales support Buying matters, but “claiming” matters more. Have you ever had an agent disappear, or waited ages on a call centre line? OMC Broker customers have a team that coordinates claims, checks hospital entitlements and talks to the insurer if an unfair problem arises.
