Ever felt this way? Every time the end of the year comes around, your heart starts to pound, and not only from excitement about your bonus, but because tax filing season is creeping ever closer! When you see your total income for the year and glance at the tax you have to pay, some people almost black out. You can't escape it, and paying in full feels like a waste of money.
So today we want to talk about a not-so-secret secret that many people may overlook: the life insurance you already hold in your hands. Did you know that the thick policy document you keep in your drawer is a golden ticket that can rescue you from a tax crisis and save you a huge amount of money?
Let's chat as friends, go through it point by point and make it crystal clear which types of insurance can reduce how much, and how to plan for the best value, along with a great helper that will make your life a whole lot easier.
1 A misunderstanding to clear up before we start
Many people think any insurance you buy can be used for a tax deduction. Let me tell you, that is completely wrong! If you think this way, you may end up in tears when filing your P.N.D. personal income tax return, because the Revenue Department has very clear rules on which types of insurance qualify and which ones miss out.
The simple principle is that the government encourages us to save and to protect ourselves against risk, so it gives tax benefits mainly to insurance that offers long-term cover or is for retirement. That means annual accident insurance with no cash value, or home fire insurance, cannot be used for personal income tax deductions. Remember that well.
2 Pocket no. 1: general life insurance (the first 100,000 you mustn't miss)
Let's start with the first quota everyone should have: general life insurance, or savings life insurance. The law allows us to deduct the premiums actually paid from our income, up to 100,000 THB.
But wait! That doesn't mean you can just walk in and buy any policy. The key condition to underline in red is
The policy must provide cover for 10 years or more
This is a crucial keyword. If you mistakenly buy a short-term savings policy, such as paying premiums for 3 years with 5 years of cover and then the contract ends, it cannot be used for a tax deduction, not even one baht! To use this entitlement, the policy must state a coverage period of 10 years or more. You can pay premiums for as little as 5 years, but the cover must run for at least 10 years.
What about whole life insurance? Even better! Whole life policies, and some annuity policies, can also count toward this 100,000 THB quota.
Selection tips If you are a salaried employee who wants to save and reduce tax at the same time, a savings policy that pays dividends along the way is a great fit. These days there are many good plans from leading companies such as Bangkok Life Assurance and Thai Life Insurance competing with each other, offering good returns and the maximum tax deduction.
3 Pocket no. 2: health insurance (looking after yourself = looking after your taxes)
These days, anyone without health insurance is very brave, because medical costs are sky-high. So the government kindly lets us deduct health insurance premiums from tax as well, up to a maximum of 25,000 THB.
But there's a critical catch! This 25,000 THB health insurance limit is not separate; it is counted within the first 100,000 THB we just talked about.
Simply put, if you have already bought 100,000 THB of life insurance, maxing out the quota, you can't deduct any more for health insurance premiums. But if you buy 75,000 THB of life insurance, you can buy another 25,000 THB of health insurance to fill the 100,000 THB quota exactly.
So planning the balance between life insurance and health insurance is very important. If you're unsure how to pair them for the best value, think of OMC Broker, because they have a neutral advisory team that will calculate for you which product to buy and how much, so the premiums you pay are not wasted and you get every last baht of deduction.
4 Pocket no. 3: annuity life insurance (the expressway to retirement wealth)
If the first 100,000 THB quota isn't enough, or your taxable income is high and you want extra help, let me introduce the knight in shining armour: annuity life insurance.
This is a separate pot from the first 100,000! You can deduct an additional 15% of your taxable income, up to a maximum of 200,000 THB.
Key conditions 1 The policy must pay out as an annuity (in instalments) from age 55 up to age 85 or beyond. 2 You must not surrender the policy early, or the tax will be clawed back retroactively with interest.
The great thing about annuity insurance is that it forces you to save money for when you are truly old. If you target strong plans from companies such as Southeast Life Insurance or Muang Thai Life Assurance with high IRR returns, you profit twice: you reduce tax now and get a monthly income in old age.
Watch out for the 500,000 THB ceiling Annuity insurance is counted in the retirement savings group, which includes RMF funds, SSF funds, provident funds (PVD), the Government Pension Fund (GPF) and the Private School Teachers' Welfare Fund. All of these combined must not exceed 500,000 THB in that tax year.
This is what gives many people a headache, because they have to sit down and work out how much they have in PVD, how much RMF they bought, and how much quota is left for annuity insurance. Get the calculation wrong and it can change everything.
5 Special bonus: health insurance for your parents (gratitude that pays off)
Besides looking after yourself, if you buy health insurance for your father or mother, you can deduct those premiums from tax up to 15,000 THB per year.
Simple conditions, but check them 1 The parent's annual income must not exceed 30,000 THB (in other words, they no longer work or have a regular income). 2 You must be their legitimate child under the law. 3 The parent must live in Thailand.
This is a great advantage, because besides giving them good benefits when they are ill, we also get a tax entitlement. There are now many health insurance plans for seniors to choose from, such as those from Viriyah Insurance or Dhipaya Insurance, with a variety of coverage suited to older people.
6 Why choosing insurance for tax deductions is such a headache
Having read this far, are you starting to feel a little dizzy? This one deducts 100,000, that one deducts 200,000, but that one combined with this one must not exceed 500,000. And which company is good? Is it easy to claim? Are the premiums expensive?
The age-old problem for people who want to buy insurance is too much information (Information Overload). When you go to a bank, the staff only promote the bank's own insurance. When you talk to Company A's agent, they say theirs is the best in the world. When you talk to Company B's agent, they fire back that theirs is better value.
In the end… you are the one left comparing dozens of policy tables in confusion, at risk of making the wrong decision and ending up with insurance that doesn't fit your lifestyle or with premiums higher than necessary.
